SEO is changing fast. Google’s algorithm is smarter than ever, penalizing spammy link-building tactics while rewarding sites that earn contextual, high-quality links from authoritative sources.

While some backlink strategies may seem easy and tempting, they often lead to penalties and long-term damage. But after being in SEO services for over 5 years, I’ve identified 7 backlink types that consistently deliver results. In this guide, I’ll show you how to secure these links without outdated tactics or wasted effort.

The 7 High-Impact Backlink Types

1. Resource Page Backlinks (Easiest Ones)

Resource pages exist to link to valuable content. They send topical relevance signals and provide consistent traffic.

Let me tell you why I love resource page backlinks – they’re literally purpose-built for linking. These are pages specifically created to link out to valuable content in a particular niche. They send topical relevance signals and provide consistent traffic. But the real deal is to find them.

How to Find Them?

  • One common way is to use Google search operators:
    • [your niche] + “helpful resources”
    • [topic] + “recommended links”
    • site:.edu [your topic] + “resources”
    • “Keyword” + inurl:resources

For example, you have a web development tool or plugin and you need relevant high quality backlink for it. You can use search string as “web development” inurl:resources and it will give you a list of resource pages that you can reach out to.

(Pro tip: Look for recently updated pages with quality outbound links)

How to Secure These Links:

  1. Identify missing or outdated resources first.
  2. Offer your content as a better replacement.
  3. Use this simple outreach template:

Outreach Template for Resource Page Link Request

Subject: Quick addition to your [Topic] resources

Hi [Name],

I found your resource page on [Topic] and love the curated links. We recently published a comprehensive, updated guide on [Topic] that might be a great addition.

Would you be open to checking it out?

Best,
[Your Name]

2. Strategic Guest Posts – Quality Over Quantity

Guest posting is still the #1 backlink strategy—when done strategically. The key is in the word “strategic.” We’re not talking about mass-produced guest posts. It’s about choosing the right websites, pitching them the right way and making it a win-win for all.

I use what I call the Triple-Win strategy for guest posts:

  • Win for their audience (valuable content)
  • Win for the site (quality, shareable article)
  • Win for you (strong backlink + referral traffic)

How to Secure These Links:

  1. Shortlist websites and pitch them unique content that aligns with their audience.
  2. Provide original research, data, or case studies.

You can use this outreach template I have tested and it secured me the link 90% of the times:

Subject: Collaboration idea for [Site Name]

Hi [Name],

I’ve been following [Site] and loved your article on [Topic].

I have a unique idea for a post that I believe your audience would find valuable:

[Proposed Title] – covering insights like [data point 1, case study, original research].

Would this be a good fit for your readers? Or I would love to hear if you have any other topic suggestions in mind.

Best,
[Your Name]

Make sure to personalize the email. And remember, most sites would ask for compensation against posting the article and your link on their website, so be ready for that and use your negotiating skills to get the best deal.

And last, but not the least, “Follow up” until you get a response. Never assume their answer is NO until they say it. Editors are busy, not uninterested.

3. The Niche Edits Link Building Without Writing New Content

You noticed that I wrote ‘The’ before Niche Edits? It’s because for me, it is the most high-impact way to build links. It saves you time and effort, because instead of writing new pieces of content, you get your link placed in an existing content. Plus, it delivers instant link juice to your website because the page is already indexed and getting actual traffic.

When selecting the websites for Niche Edits, prioritize sites that are relevant to your niche or the page at least has a logical connection to your content. Make sure they are getting traffic, and have good authority. Avoid “write for us” sites that publish low-quality guest content.

For example: If a food blog writes about the best local dishes in Thailand, and you are a cafe / restaurant that specializes in one of those dishes, you can get yourself a mention.

How to Secure These Links:

  1. Find somewhat relevant, high-traffic articles that lack mention of a good resource or links to outdated sources that you can replace.
  2. Offer your website as a better resource to replace it.
  3. You can also find link opportunities for valuable resources i.e data, insights, research, which you’ve already published on your website.

Here is my personal outreach template for that:

Subject: Quick update to your [Topic] article

Hi [Name],

I was reading your article on [Topic] and I must say, it’s Amazing! I noticed a section on [Specific Point], where I thought I could do some addition. I recently created an updated resource covering [latest research, data, or insights].

Would you be open to adding this for your readers? Let me know and I’ll share the link.

I totally understand if you don’t want to, just let me know and I won’t insist but I’ll keep supporting your work.

Best, [Your Name]

The real effort in this process is to find the right prospects whom you can pitch and secure a link. Do not blast out hundreds of emails to random website lists begging for a random link insertion. They get ignored or, worse, marked as spam.

If you hate doing all this manual work, use Serpzilla to streamline this process. With their database of over 150,000 websites, You can quickly filter niche-relevant sites that accept content updates and meet my quality criteria. And this will save you hours of manual prospecting.

4. Digital PR to Earning High-Authority Backlinks

Journalists and bloggers, and industry sites are constantly looking for expert quotes, research, unique angles, and insights. Here’s how to secure these high-value links:

  • Create newsworthy content: Industry reports, unique research, or expert insights.
  • Build relationships: Engage purposefully with journalists and bloggers through their content on Twitter, LinkedIn, Threads, etc.
  • Pitch relevant stories to media outlets: Focus on how your expertise adds value.

Content Angles That Always Work

I’ve tested dozens of angles. These consistently get picked up:

In order to win with the digital PR strategy, you can start with smaller, more approachable publications and move up the ladder step-by-step. And if you do this strategy right, Digital PR doesn’t just generate backlinks—it positions you as an authority in your field, opening doors to even more opportunities.

5. Broken Link Building:

No website wants to keep a broken link. If you offer them a valuable replacement, they’ll 100% want to update their content.

You can use tools like Ahrefs or Check My Links Chrome Extension to find broken links in your niche sites. Then reach out to the website, pitching your resource as an alternative. If you do not already have a similar resource, you can create a better, updated version of the missing content or add a paragraph to any relevant article on your website and then pitch them.

Here is an Outreach template for your help:

Subject: Important: Quick fix for your [Topic] article

Hi [Name],

While reading an article about [TOPIC] on your website, I found a broken link on this page [URL] with anchor text as [Anchor]. It links to a dead page which might frustrate your readers.

I had recently created a more up-to-date, comprehensive resource on this topic that covers [Unique features 1, 2, 3 of your content]. Would you be open to replacing the broken link with it?Best,
[Your Name]

6. Creating Content That Naturally Attracts Links – aka Link Magnets

Some content types attract backlinks effortlessly because they’re in-demand among bloggers and journalists. But “Just create great content and the links will come naturally.” is a Lie.

You need to create the RIGHT KIND of content that solve specific problems for content creators in your industry, and market it properly to get the right people to know about it.

Here are some best Link Magnet types:

  1. Original Research & Data (surveys, industry studies)
  2. Ultimate Guides (comprehensive step-by-step guides)
  3. Free Tools & Templates (calculators, checklists, spreadsheets)

Now how to secure these Links?

First of all, do some solid research and find a gap you can fill. Then develop a resource that is so good that everyone naturally wants to talk about it and mention it. Remember, you are saving thousands of dollars which you would have invested to buy links from those big publications and industry sites, so put the real effort and good investment in building this ever-green link bait resource and make it genuinely valuable.

Then promote the content via email outreach, social media, and community forums. Share it with journalists and bloggers who cover similar topics. Talk about it as much as possible. You can also partner with relevant micro-niche influencers to get the initial attention.

7. Relationship-Based Links (The Long-Term Strategy)

Building connections with site owners, bloggers, and journalists leads to recurring link opportunities.

Remember, every strong relationship you build not only generates multiple link opportunities, but opens doors to new connections, and also creates a compound value over time.

Conclusion

And there you have it – 7 proven types of backlinks that actually work in 2025. But here’s the important takeaway: While each type is powerful on its own, the magic happens when you combine them strategically. And here’s a next-steps actionable guide for you if you have made it until here.

  1. Start with one strategy. Don’t try all at once. Pick one method based on your site’s current authority and goals.
  2. Prioritize quality over quantity. One high-quality contextual link beats 50 low-quality ones.
  3. Stay persistent. Link building is a long-term game. Outreach takes time, but results compound.

Start implementing these strategies today, but think long-term. Networking and collaborations lead to organic, long-term backlinks. The links you build and relationships you forge now will continue paying dividends for years to come.

Best of Luck!
